The Green Team
Our school is proud to have been awarded two green flags for working hard on environmental issues. Ms Lucey, Ms Scannell and the green team are always busy finding new ways to ensure our school impacts positively on the surrounding environment. The focus of our recent campaign has been 'Reducing our carbon footprint'. It compliments the earlier efforts made to reduce, reuse and recycle, which are now a major part of everyday life. Have a look at what the various classes do to ensure the school remains 'green' at all times.

Not everyone has water at the turn of their taps. Drought is a severe shortage of water. Sadly millions of people all over the world suffer as a result of drought. Keep this in mind next time you turn on your tap. Water is precious, so use it wisely. The short video below will give you an insight into the plight of those living without water.

| Activities | Benefits | What can I do? |
| Waste reduction and recycling |
We try to use less paper, tinfoil and other packaging so that we send less rubbish to landfill sites. This ensures that packaging is not used unnecessarily. Fruit and vegetables are collected for compost by sixth class, giving us rich food for our flower pots and window boxes. |
Write and photocopy on both sides of the paper. Don't wrap your lunch in tinfoil or cling film. Put paper in the green bin for recycling. Put your fruit (except citrus fruits) in the fruit bins provided. |
| Saving the boglands |
Our peatlands are disappearing fast. These special areas have a wealth of natural resources including unique wildlife. We work with the Irish Peatland Conservation Council to safeguard the boglands for the future. |
Collect used stamps and place them in the coloured envelopes in your classroom. The stamps will be used to by the IPCC to purchase portions of bogland. |
| Litter patrol | A hard working team of fourth class students keep an eye out for litter around the school. Litter is unsightly and destroys our beautiful school. |
If you see litter strewn around the school grounds, find a bin and put the litter in it. |
| Bird feeding | Birds are an important part of the school environment. Many of them eat bugs and insects that attack our flowers and plants so they are our friends. Second class children are very kind as they ensure that the birds are always fed druing winter. |
Put food out on the bird tables or in bird nets during the harsh winter months. Remember birds love nuts and pulses. |
| Reducing energy consumption |
We waste far too much energy in our homes and schools. We are working hard to reduce the energy by switching off lights and machines when not in use and closing the windows when we are not about. Less energy means less carbon dioxide - the gas that is damaging our environment. |
Swith off lights during the day and take advantage of natural light at all times. Close the windows when the radiators are in use. Close the blinds during lunch break to reatain heat. Turn off the computers, cd players and other equipment when you are not using them. |
| Recycling batteries and ink cartridges |
Batteries and ink cartridges are difficult to dispose of and can cause a huge amount of damage to the environment. |
Bring your batteries and ink cartridges to Mr. Lyons in the computer room. He will ensure they are recycled. |

Our Green School Flag
In June 2008 the school celebrated in style when we were awarded our second green flag. It was the culmination of a huge amount of work by the whole school community. Congratulations to the green team who were wonderful representatives for the school during the flag raising ceremony. A huge thank you to Ms Scannell and Ms Lucy for all their hard work. We hope our green flag will fly for many years to come.
